During my internship at AIWG, I experienced how academic research can be connected to social relevance. I gained practical experience and deepened my perspective on Islam, identity, and diversity in the European context.
In this seminar at the CNMS (Center for Near and Middle Eastern Studies), I presented my analysis of the German perceptions of the Hijaz—especially Mecca—through the travel account of Heinrich von Maltzan in his book Meine Wallfahrt nach Mekka. The session was supervised by Prof. Dr. Amr Ryad and Prof. Dr. Albrecht Fuess and included contributions from various European and Arab scholars.
As part of the visit from the University of Marburg to the city of Gotha, we had the unique opportunity to explore one of the most important manuscript libraries in Europe for Arabic and Islamic Studies. The Gotha Research Library, with its exceptional collection, especially those acquired by Orientalist Ulrich Jasper Seetzen in the early 19th century, remains a central hub for scholars worldwide. This visit offered valuable insights into the preservation and study of Arabic heritage in Germany.
Join the upcoming ENIS Spring School in Lausanne, hosted by the Centre for Near and Middle Eastern Studies (CNMS), University of Marburg, as it explores the lives of Muslims on the geographical, normative, political, and religious margins. This unique event highlights experiences often overlooked in mainstream discourse. In connection with this theme, read the article "From the Periphery to the Islamic Center", which delves into the life, conversion, and legacy of ʿAlī Ibn Rabbān al-Ṭabarī — a scholar whose journey from the margins reshaped Islamic intellectual history.
