Reciting Qur'ān

The Excellence of Reciting the Qur'ān

🔶 Abu Mūsa al-Ash‘ari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Keep on reciting the Qur’an, for by the One in Whose Hand my life is, the Qur’an slips away from memory faster than camels escaping their tying ropes."

🔶 Hadith Explanation:

The Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) urged his Companions to recite the Qur’an regularly. He then swore by Allah, the Almighty, that the noble Qur’an slips away from one’s memory faster than a camel escapes the rope tied to the middle of its foreleg to prevent it from running away. So he likened the memorized Qur’an to tied camels attempting to get away.

By enabling them to memorize the Qur’an, Allah, the Almighty, has bestowed such a great favor and grace upon those who learn this Book by heart. Therefore, they should take care of it and recite it on a regular basis to avoid forgetting it.

To this end, one may allocate a certain portion to be read daily. As for forgetfulness naturally experienced by all human beings, there is nothing wrong with that. However, with regard to those who neglect the Qur’an and do nothing to retain it in memory after Allah, the Almighty, has endowed them with such a great blessing, it is feared that they will be subject to punishment from their Lord.

Hence, we should devote attention to the noble Qur’an and recite it frequently so as to keep it within our hearts. We should also act upon its teachings and rulings, thus boosting its memorization.
